Voluntary commitment strengthens our society. Every third person in Brandenburg works voluntarily for the community, representing the top place in eastern Germany. The vast amount of volunteer work in the towns and cities makes Brandenburg’s heart beat. Numerous associations, voluntary fire departments, councils, citizen initiatives and self-help groups contribute to community. Brandenburg’s society can rely on the trust, solidarity, enthusiasm and responsibility of its people. A committed community increases opportunities for everyone, while a society which benefits from the participation of its residents is ready to meet challenges that lie ahead.

A commitment to society represents a valuable resource in our democracy and is an essential supplement to governmental actions. The state government and local authorities are called upon to create a political and legal framework which supports neighbourly help and voluntary activities. In order to have positive conditions for volunteers, it is essential to supply them with sufficient information and offer them recognition and esteem for their voluntary work.

For years now, the Office for Social Commitment – which is under the direct control of the State Prime Minister – has been the main contact point for local volunteers. It also arranges basic facilities such as comprehensive liability and accident insurance during voluntary work.

A commitment to society deserves thanks and recognition. In addition to the established forms of appreciation, we have created new elements in the culture of esteem, such as for instance the “Volunteer of the Month” and the “Volunteer Pass”. A “State of Brandenburg Volunteer Card” has been developed as a shared initiative of local authorities, companies and businesses, volunteer associations, chambers of commerce and institutions, clubs and associations.

“Active for Brandenburg” has become an established brand over the last few years. And we will continue to work for our society in the future, because appreciating voluntary work and independent social commitment demonstrates solidarity and responsibility.
